Time attack NB. This makes me want to learn how to fiberglass. Really, really badly. Get some foam and carve up the shape I want on the car, lay fibreglass over it, let it cure then ditch the foam leaving a lightweight shell the shape of a hardtop. Cannibalize an old soft top for the necessary mounting hardware, add some weatherstripping, get some clear plastic from Lowes, and boom. DIY hardtop.

Hmm, interesting! That’s neither an autokonexion nor warhorseperformance fastback hardtop!

Kinja'd!!!

Or you try to convince the government that the NB2 coupe is similar enough to the NB2 convertible to allow it to be imported.

Lose the underbite and then we’re in business.

I’d your do learn to use fiberglass, feel free to post about it. I've been wanting to learn how to do it as well. There's even some not terribly priced carbon fiber available on eBay these days.

Looks like roughly $50 to get more than enough actual fiberglass fabric. I dunno what sort of resin I’d use but that’s, what, $20? Then $100 worth of foam and wood to make a good plug, another $50 for the clear plastic windows (lexan?), and another $50 for a donor softtop. Still at 1/7th the cost of an actual hardtop, lol. I just looked up how to do this stuff on a DIY aviation website and it works exactly how I thought it does. The local FSAE time I was on does fiberglass and carbon fiber all the time, so (and I hate to say this) how hard could it be (oh god there I go)?

It’s super messy but really not too difficult. Most auto parts stores sell small fiberglass repair kits for about $10-15. Start with something small and practice with a few different ideas. My first project, just after fishing high school almost ten years ago, was to modify my door panels to fit oversized speakers. Took a weekend, wasn’t terribly pretty from close up, but it was functional and I was damn proud of myself.

You could also check with these places for supplies:

FibreGlast.com

Eastwood.com

Sweet, thanks for the resources! The hardest part is probably going to be making a good/symmetrical plug. I guess a good small starter would be a speaker enclosure of some sort. Tons of people do that so there’s no shortage of experience I can lean on.

You'll need a lot of resin. Look for boat repair resin, you can get it in big cans

Symmetry won't be that hard, make one half then make tools to check the shape. Think a sheet of foam cut to match the profile every few inches

Amazon has 1 gallon jugs for cheap. Like $50 for a half gallon of resin and a half gallon of hardener.

Aircraft Spruce also sells pretty much everything for doing fiberglass and carbon fiber. Perhaps a little more pricey, but quality stuff.

Cardboard is great for making tools to check profile. Or even for making a plug/buck, depending on desired shape or profile.

Oh, and have a box of latex or nitrile gloves and always wear them when working with this stuff!

I was planning on doubling up on nitrile gloves, for sure.

Thinking more about it, you’re probably going to need to borrow a hardtop from someone. A trusted body shop near me handles normal cars and race car (primarily LeMons and Spec Miatas) borrowed my top (in return for a free re-coloring on it) so he could make a his own Miata roof with the look of a C3 Stingray’s C-pillar.

If you can borrow any type of Miata hardtop, then you can at least nail the roofline from the windshield frame to the rear glass.

I want so badly to see the finished product of a C3 miata hardtop.

It should make its debut in time for the Southern Discomfort 24 Hours of LeMons on April 30th at Carolina Motorsports Park, SC.
